ARTHROSCOPIC SURGERY

Arthroscopic, or minimally invasive, surgery is a procedure to diagnosis and repair joint problems.  Using advanced medical technology, our surgeons can help assess what is causing your pain and, through arthroscopic surgery, may be able to repair your injury.  Arthroscopic surgery results in smaller scars, less postoperative pain, and quicker recovery time.

Through an incision the width of a straw tip, our surgeons are able to insert an arthroscope (i.e. a small camera) that allows him or her to inspect your joint and locate the source of your pain.  The arthroscope can also help identify tears or other damage that may have been missed by an x-ray or MRI.The surgeon makes one or more small incisions to accommadte the instruments used to repair the joint.  These instruments can sgave, trim, cut, stitch, or smooth the damaged areas.

PAIN MANAGEMENT

Pain management includes the multi-disciplinary management of acute and chronic pain. Techniques include all standard spinal diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, spinal cord stimulation, radiofrequency ablation, sympathetic blocks, discography, and medical management.

LAMINECTOMY/LAMINOTOMY/LAMINOPLASTY

Laminectomy involves removal of the entire lamina in one or more places to remove the pressure on the nerves.  Laminotomy involves removal of just a portion of the lamina to release the pressure on the nerves. It is performed when only a small part of a slightly damaged disc needs relief.  Laminoplasty  involves the opening of the lamina to remove the pressure on the nerves when a disc bulges. It is also used when the disc is badly damaged and a discectomy needs to be performed. If stenosis is present, the foramen (opening between the vertebrae) is enlarged to allow space for the nerve to exit. On rare occasions this may include a fusion.

The incision will be made in a vertical fashion.  The length of the incision depends on how many levels of the spine that needs to be corrected. Posterior incisions may take longer to heal and often leave a noticeable scars.

EMG/NERVE CONDUCTION STUDY

An electromyogram (EMG) measures the electrical activity of muscles at rest and during contraction. Nerve conduction studies measure how well and how fast the nerves can send electrical signals.

Nerves control the muscles in the body with electrical signals called impulses. These impulses make the muscles react in specific ways. Nerve and muscle problems cause the muscles to react in abnormal ways.

EMG/Nerve Conduction studies are done to diagnosis a number of conditions and/or find diseases that damage muscle tissue, nerves, or the junctions between nerve and muscle.

In conjuction with the EMG/nerve conduction study, Dr. Bathia is able to further diagnosis disorders of the muscle, nerves, and joints.
