Dr. Nicholas Colyvas, MD

Board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery | Board certified in Sports Medicine

Dr. Nicholas Colyvas is an orthopedic sports medicine surgeon who specializes arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgery of the knee and shoulder, with particular interests in meniscus preservation.  He is recognized as a leader in the field of meniscus repair and frequently gives talks and seminars on the topic to his peers.   In clinical practice he is actively involved in evaluating and using new techniques and devices for meniscus repair, frequently treating complex or challenging meniscus cases and allowing for preservation where resection would typically have occurred.

 

In addition Dr. Colyvas has subspecialty interests in shoulder instability, rotator cuff surgery and biceps tendon surgery.  He has extensive experience in treating athletes of all types, both professional and amateur. He has also served as team physician for numerous sports, including rugby and football teams.

 

Dr. Colyvas' main research is in the field of meniscus preservation. He investigates cutting edge techniques in meniscus repairs, with the goal of preventing knee arthritis in the long term. He is also active in improving techniques for treating rotator cuff tears and biceps tendon problems.

 

Dr. Colyvas earned his medical degree at University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He then completed a fellowship as well as a residency in orthopedic surgery at UCSF.

 

Dr. Colyvas is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, where he serves on the practice management committee. He also serves on the board at the California Orthopaedic Association. Colyvas is a clinical professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCSF, where he enjoys teaching orthopedic fellows and residents, and assisting in the care of complex and challenging knee and shoulder surgeries.

Dr. Elly LaRoque, MD

Dr. Elly LaRoque completed her residency in orthopaedic surgery at Stanford University and her fellowship in sports medicine and arthroscopy with the Stanford University Medical School and Sports Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Medicine Associates (SOAR). Dr. LaRoque is a Clinical Instructor at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco and teaches at the San Francisco Veterans Administration Hospital. Her special interests include arthroscopy, rehabilitation of the knee and shoulder and women's sports injuries.

Dr. David Smolins, MD

A Magna Cum Laude graduate of The University of Texas, Austin with degrees in Psychology and Biological Sciences, Dr. David Smolins received virtually every top honor in his graduating class. After finishing his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Texas, San Antonio (again with top honors), Dr. Smolins spent a year as an intern at the University of Chicago / Weiss Memorial Hospital. Dr. Smolins completed his resident training in Anesthesiology and his fellowship training in Pain Management at the University of California, San Francisco. In addition, his recent experience includes responsibilities as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care at UCSF / Veteran Affairs Medical Center and as an Anesthesiologist for Kaiser, San Francisco.

 

Dr. Smolins pain management experience includes: fellowship training specializing in the multi-disciplinary management of acute and chronic pain. Techniques include all standard spinal diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, spinal cord stimulation, radiofrequency ablation, sympathetic blocks, discography, and medical management.

Dr. Kristin Wingfield, MD

Board certified in Sport and Exercise Medicine (Canada)

Dr. Kristin Wingfield is a primary care sports medicine specialist, board certified through the Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine and fellowship trained at Stanford University. She is a current team physician for the San Francisco Ballet, Marin Academy High School, and Team TWENTY 16 women's professional cycling team. In 2010, she worked at the medical clinic at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games caring for the Olympic athletes and staff on site in Whistler, BC. She has traveled as a team physician for the Canadian Alpine ski team to World Cup ski races, as well as the Canadian Women's basketball team. She was the team physician for Canada at the FINA World championships in 2003 in Barcelona and worked with the Canadian medical team at the Sydney Olympic games as a medical student.

Dr. Wingfield herself was an elite gymnast on the Canadian gymnastics team, an elite springboard diver, and a professional acrobat in Cirque Du Soleil. Now that she has 3 young boys, she stays closer to home in Mill Valley and enjoys seeing patients in both Marin and San Francisco.

Dr. Wingfield sees all types of athletic injuries, including acute and overuse, in all age groups, children to masters. Her patients are weekend warriors, active people, recreational to elite athletes, and dancers/performing artists. She enjoys using her extensive experience in elite sports to help others quickly recover from their injuries and get back to the activities they love as quickly as possible.

Dr. Neeti Bathia, MD

Board certified in Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine

Dr. Neeti Bathia received her undergraduate degree from Duke University and her medical degree from Cornell University. She completed her internship in Internal Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center and her residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation. Dr. Bathia completed her fellowship in Sports Medicine and Interventional Spine Procedures at the Hospital for Special Surgery. She is also trained in the use of diagnostic ultrasound in musculoskeletal conditions. Dr. Bathia has presented diagnostic ultrasound cases for the American College of Sports Medicine and spine pain at the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She has also publised on ultrasound guidance for shoulder injections.

 

Dr. Bathia's academic interests include women's sports medicine and running medicine. She has been involved in medical coverage for multiple road races sponsored by New York Road Runners, including the New York City Marathon and multiple half-marathons. She has conducted research on prevention of overuse injuries in runners and is an avid runner herself. She is also currently one of the physicians for the Santa Clara University Athletics.

Dr. Jothi Murali, MD

Dr. Jothi Murali is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in Sports Medicine and Trauma Surgery. Her clinical expertise include shoulder, elbow, knee, and ankle arthroscopy; upper and lower extremity trauma; shoulder arthroplasty; and pediatric and adolescent injuries. Following her Orthopaedic Surgery Residency and trauma fellowship at Brown University, she came to California to complete her Sports Medicine Fellowship at University of California, Davis. She was lured to California by the perfect weather, but still supports her Boston-based sports teams (go Sox!).

 

She is an avid tennis and soccer player, surfer, hiker and snowboarder and truly understands the importance of restoration of form and function after injury. She seeks to improve her patients' conditions to allow them to fulfill their goals, which involves pursuit of the highest standard of care and educating her patients in depth. Catherine Cheung, DPM, FACFAS

Dr. Catherine Cheung is Board Certified in both Foot Surgery and Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. She attended the University of California, Los Angeles and California College of Podiatric Medicine. She is a Qualified Medical Evaluator. She speaks Cantonese Chinese and some Spanish. She has publications in the Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery, Clinics of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, as well as Podiatry Today. Mikel Davenport, L.Ac.

Diplomate of the National Board of Acupuncture Orthopaedics

During his ten year training in Chinese Martial Arts, including traveling to China for advanced Qi Gung training, Mike discovered the healing powers of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). This brought him to the Five Branches Institute where he earned a Masters in TCM, specializing in orthopaedic and muskuloskeletal acupuncture. Mike furthered his training by completing an internship in internal medicine at the Zheijang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China. In addition, Mike has completed the 300 hour Lerner Education course in orthopaedics and has certification in acupressure and tui na from the Accupressure Institute.
